Reviewing the Mets’ 2018 draft

Who did the Mets select in the 2018 draft, and how did they do?

With their first selection in the 2018 MLB Draft, the Mets selected Jarred Kelenic, an outfielder from Waukesha West High School, in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He made his professional debut with the GCL Mets and was later promoted to the Kingsport Mets, hitting a combined .286/.371/.468 in 56 games between the two levels.

Rounds 2-10

With their second round pick, the Mets selected Simeon Woods-Richardson, a right-handed pitcher out of Fort Bend Kempner High School in Sugar Land, Texas. He made his professional debut with the GCL Mets and was later promoted to the Kingsport Mets at the end of the season, posting a 1.56 ERA in 17.1 innings pitching with 26 strikeouts against 4 walks between the two levels.

With their third round pick, the Mets selected Carlos Cortes, a second baseman out of the University of South Carolina. Previously drafted by the Mets in the twentieth round of the 2016 MLB Draft as a high school player, Cortes made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones, and hit .264/.338/.382 in 47 games.

With their fourth round pick, the Mets selected Adam Hill, a right-handed pitcher also out of the University of South Carolina. He made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and posted a 2.35 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched, walking 7 and striking out 26.

With their fifth round pick, the Mets selected Ryley Gilliam, a right-handed pitcher out of Clemson University. He made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and posted a 2.08 ERA in 17.1 innings pitched, walking 13 and striking out 31 along the way.

With their sixth round pick, the Mets selected Nick Meyer, a defensive minded catcher out of California Polytechnic State University. He made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones, and hit .226/.275/.270 in 43 games.

With their seventh round pick, the Mets selected Kevin Smith, a left-handed pitcher out of the University of Georgia. He made his professional debut with the Brooklyn Cyclones and posted a 0.76 ERA with 6 walks and 28 strikeouts in 23.2 innings pitched.

With their ninth round pick, the Mets selected Bryce Montes de Oca, a tall right-handed pitcher out of the University of Missouri. He spent the entirety of the 2018 season on the disabled list and is yet to make his professional debut.
