It wasn’t perfect, but the Mets continued to play spoiler for the Phillies, winning 9-4 in Philadelphia. Zack Wheeler started strong, stumbled, but then rallied to close out the game with a couple of scoreless innings, and because his name is not ‘Jacob deGrom’, the Mets scored enough runs to get him the win. Michael Conforto led the way with a 3-for-4, six RBI performance, including his 26th home run of the year. Jeff McNeil also had another good game, with three hits of his own.
The win improves the Mets to 70-80 and, more importantly, keeps the Phillies at least 6.5 games out of the NL East lead. Steven Matz takes the mound against Aaron Nola as the Mets look to play spoiler again and improve Jacob deGrom’s Cy Young candidacy tomorrow evening.
Full recap to follow.
