Steven Matz was the star of the show but once he was out of the game it fell apart quickly and the Mets fell to the Phillies 5-2.
Even Matz was not at his best but he kept Philadelphia off the board through five innings. He helped his own cause with some nifty glovework and he put the Mets on the board with a solo shot off Aaron Nola.
Dominic Smith drove in the other run off Nola when he doubled home Brandon Nimmo. Nola did not make it through six innings and his ERA did go up a smidgen to 2.44.
Once both starters were out of the game it became a tale of two bullpens. The Phillies’ bullpen got out of a bases loaded jam to bail out their starter, whereas once Matz was out Philadelphia immediately went ahead. Jerry Blevins and Drew Smith combined to get one out while giving up five runs in the sixth. Jorge Alfaro had the biggest blow when he crushed a three-run home run to left.
The rest of the bullpen was fine but the damage was done and the Mets’ offense did not have a comeback in them.
Full recap to follow.
