Final Score: Mets 4, Braves 1 — Vargy in Chargey

The catchers carried the offense as Jason Vargas shut down Atlanta.

MLB: Atlanta Braves at New York Mets Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Tonight’s 4-1 victory over the Braves came with some big contributions from some unlikely suspects. At some point we must’ve stepped into the Twilight Zone and entered a world in which Jason Vargas permanently entered Vargy Mode. Through six innings it looked as if Vargas was destined to be given the deGrom treatment from the offense with the only run of the game coming on Kevin Plawecki’s third inning dinger. Fortunately, Devin Mesoraco extended the lead from one run to four runs on his seventh inning home run.

Jason Vargas had one of his most impressive starts of the season tonight as he went seven shutout innings against Atlanta while striking out six and only allowing three scattered hits. Unfortunately for everyone, the relievers that came after Vargas weren’t as effective. In the eighth inning, the triumvirate of Anthony Swarzak, Daniel Zamora, and Drew Smith allowed one run and managed to escape a corners situation before any more damage could be done.

Robert Gsellman came in for the ninth inning and gsealed the deal on the Mets’ 75th win of the season by striking out Freddie Freeman with two men on.

Full recap to follow.
