The Mets pitching and defensive woes were on full display in their 11-4 loss to the Dodgers.

Jason Vargas got the start and was solid early on. The lefty was even handed a 4-0 lead by a pair of two-run home runs by Jay Bruce and Michael Conforto. It then turned and turned quickly for the southpaw. Poor pitching and sloppy defense led to a blowup in the fourth.

Austin Barnes cut into the lead in the third with a two-run home run but the wheels came off the next inning. David Freese led off with a home run and then with runners on second and third Todd Frazier made an error which tied the game. He then did not get a runner at home and instead went for a double play that didn’t get turned which gave the Dodgers the lead.

The bullpen had been holding steady until Corey Oswalt blew up in the seventh. He gave up four runs without recording an out. Jacob Rhame was then called upon to try to stop the bleeding but instead two runs scored on a single when Jay Bruce threw to the wrong base.

The offense attempted a rally in the ninth with the bases loaded but Jeff McNeil popped up, Jose Reyes struck out, and Conforto flew out to end a sloppy, ugly game.
