We're getting incredibly close to pitchers and catchers reporting (February 12th!), so it's about that time to project the (way too early) 25-man roster. The Mets will be bringing in 13 minor league players for Spring Training, which includes the following:
1B Peter Alonso
SS Andres Gimenez
C: Patrick Mazeika, Colton Plaia, Ali Sánchez
OF Tim Tebow
LHP P.J. Conlon, Anthony Kay, David Peterson
RHP Ryder Ryan, Corey Taylor, Josh Torres, Stephen Villines
It's likely that none of these players make the MLB roster on opening day unless an injury were to occur. However, it'll be a matter of weeks after the season begins before Peter Alonso is with the team in an everyday capacity. As for the rest of the team, it could look something like this to begin the season:
1B Todd Frazier
2B Robinson Cano
SS Amed Rosario
3B Jed Lowrie
OF Michael Conforto
OF Brandon Nimmo
UTIL Jeff McNeil
C Wilson Ramos
SP Jacob deGrom
SP Noah Syndergaard
SP Zack Wheeler
SP Steven Matz
SP Jason Vargas
CP Edwin Diaz
RP Jeurys Familia
RP Seth Lugo
RP Robert Gsellman
RP Daniel Zamora
RP Luis Avilan
RP Drew Smith
RP Kyle Dowdy (Rule 5 pick)
BN Juan Lagares
BN Keon Broxton
BN Travis d'Arnaud
BN Dominic Smith
On the outside looking in would be Peter Alonso, Luis Guillorme, Gavin Cecchini, J.D. Davis, Tomas Nido and tons of relievers. It's hard to ignore the fact that the Mets have not handled the development of Dominic Smith well, and it's truly a question of whether he will actually make the big league roster right off the rip. However, if he shows improvement in Spring Training, then he will surely make the roster as a bench piece, and will definitely be an option to start at 1B or a corner outfield spot should any injuries occur. Otherwise, if the Mets do not trade Travis d'Arnaud or Todd Frazier, or sign A.J. Pollock on a team friendly contract, then this looks to be the roster for opening day. Is there anything you would change whether it would be by trade, or through the minor league system? Let me know below.
