With the second day of the winter meetings having mostly wrapped up, the only rumors that involved the Mets on the day were fairly depressing.
The bigger rumor of the two came from Andy Martino, who reported that the team is still talking about a Starling Marte trade with the Pirates and indicated that they’d likely trade a major league outfielder in a potential deal. He specified that the Mets are open to trading Brandon Nimmo.
The other Mets rumor of that day came from Martino in tweet about Marte, in which he also mentioned that the Mets are working on unloading Jed Lowrie’s contract so the team can sign a player like Rick Porcello or Dellin Betances.
Meanwhile, teams operating with major league budgets were talking a big contract with Gerrit Cole, a pitcher the Mets aren’t even pretending to be in on. When asked about Cole, Brodie Van Wagenen said the Mets were confident in the front end of their rotation and would try to be “opportunistic elsehwere.”
