Winter meetings round-up, Day 1: All Quiet on The Metstern Front

The Mets were quiet on a busy day in San Diego.

MLB: General Managers Meetings Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The winter meetings got underway in San Diego today, and the Mets could remain passive for the rest of the week. GM Brodie Van Wagenen met with the media and did nothing to put that rumor to rest. According to him, Zack Wheeler’s price rose to a point that exceeded the Mets’ projections for him, and Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman are possible rotation replacements.

“Depth” seems to be the most important issue on the GM’s mind. The Wilpons will continue to Wilpon until they no longer can. On the plus side, Van Wagenen confirmed the Endy Chavez video and said that Yoenis Cespedes does, in fact, live.

Beloved pitching coach Phil Regan will remain in the organization.

Dellin Betances is interested in a short-term deal, which could put him in the Mets’ price range.

David Wright is in San Diego to once again work with the front office.

Carlos Beltran and Hensley Meulens had lunch with Terry Collins. All in all, riveting stuff from a team that just barely missed the playoffs last season.

The biggest Mets-related news of the day was that the Nationals signed Stephen Strasburg to a massive $245 million contract.
