It might’ve been six months since Jacob deGrom’s last regular season start, but even with all that time off, some things never change. Without his best stuff, deGrom had few issues mowing down the Nationals left, right, and center. The 2018 Cy Young sat down 10 Nats while only giving up five hits and walking one over six solid innings of work. To close out their 2-0 victory, the Mets sent out what should be their typical closing trio of Seth Lugo, Jeurys Familia, and Edwin Diaz.
Keeping in line with the similarities to 2018, the offense had a rough day at the dish. Now, that’s not completely the batters’ fault as Max Scherzer was sweating, pacing, and grunting through 7.2 innings like only he can. Going two outs into the eighth inning, Scherzer struck out 12, gave up two hits, and allowed two runs. Both of the Mets’ runs came from the smooth swings of the recently acquired Robinson Cano. In his first at bat as a Met, Cano sent Scherzer’s changeup over the fence in center field. In his fourth time up, he lined a single into left field allowing Dominic Smith to come home as the Mets’ second run.
As Edwin Diaz silenced Matt Adams, he sealed his first save, the Mets’ first win, and Jacob deGrom’s first win of the 2019 season.
Full recap to follow.
