Final Score: Mets 7, Marlins 3-Big Ball Chunky Time

Pete Alonso’s first career home run sealed this one.

MLB: New York Mets at Miami Marlins Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

In what looked like another annoying, sloppy Marlins loss one big swing by Pete Alonso put the capper on an exhilarating 7-3 victory.

The Mets were down early when Steven Matz was let down by his defense. In the first inning Wilson Ramos allowed a dropped strike three which allowed a runner reach base. Starlin Castro brought him home with a two-run home run to give the Marlins an early lead. Then in the sixth J.D. Davis had a nightmare of an inning where he failed to turn a double play and dropped a throw from Juan Lagares which eventually led to the Marlins’ third run.

The Mets however chipped away and tied it at three when Juan Lagares hit a solo home run in the seventh. The bullpen held the Marlins until the offense exploded in the ninth. Amed Rosario’s RBI single gave the Mets the lead, but Alonso sealed it with an absolute blast to centerfield for a three-run home run.

Edwin Diaz came in for the ninth and had some trouble in a non-save situation but three strikeouts got him through the inning to nail down the victory.

Full recap to follow.
