Chris Flexen’s spot start did not go well, the bullpen didn’t pitch any better, and the Mets were shut out until the seventh inning.

Today’s game went just about as expected for the Mets, as the Cardinals evened up the series in dominating fashion today, beating the Mets 10-2. Chris Flexen made his season debut for the Mets in place of Jacob deGrom and took the loss, giving up six runs—five of them earned—in 4 13 innings of work. The Cardinals piled on against the Mets bullpen. Luis Avilan, Jacob Rhame, and Paul Sewald combined to give up four additional runs.

Meanwhile, the Mets were held scoreless until the seventh by Miles Mikolas, who was the first Cardinal starter to record an out in the seventh this season. The Mets had managed just two hits off Mikolas until the seventh. Jeff McNeil provided the only real highlight of the day by slapping a one-out single for the 100th hit of his career, becoming the fastest Met to ever reach that mark. Amed Rosario tripled to drive in McNeil and J.D. Davis grounded out to plate Rosario for the Mets’ only two runs of the day.

Giovanny Gallegos pitched a 1-2-3 ninth in relief of Mikolas to secure an easy victory for the Cardinals.

Full recap to follow.
