Final Score: Mets 5, Phillies 1-Matzerpiece theater

The Mets defeated the Phillies by a final score of 5-1 after a lengthy rain delay at Citi Field. The delay did not affect Steven Matz who was brilliant over six innings. His only blemish was a solo home run by Rhys Hoskins.

Jake Arrieta was also solid for the Phillies but the Mets were able to get to him. They scored two in the third with RBI hits by Pete Alonso and Wilson Ramos, and Jeff McNeil blasted his first home run of the year in the fifth to give the Mets a two-run lead.

That remained the score until the wheels fell off a bit for the Phillies in the seventh. After an error set up first and third and nobody out for the Mets, both McNeil and Alonso were hit with pitches to force in a run. Michael Conforto followed with a sacrifice fly to further add to the Mets’ lead.

The bullpen was brilliant for the Mets with the combination of Seth Lugo, Jeurys Familia, and Edwin Diaz giving the Phillies absolutely nothing to work with. They each easily handled their assignments and gave the Mets and Matz a much needed victory.

Full recap to follow.
