It was the Zack Wheeler show tonight at Citi Field.

MLB: Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

Zack Wheeler had a night for the history books, as he excelled on the mound and at the plate to help the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-0 at Citi Field. The victory secured a series win for the Mets and propelled them ahead of the Phillies for first place in the National League East.

Wheeler was simply spectacular in every facet of the game. He struck out 11 batters—including seven straight at one point—over seven shutout innings while scattering five hits. He also drove in the first two runs of the game with a second-inning double and added his first career home run in the fourth. He became the fifth Mets pitcher to hit a home run and strike out 10 or more batters in a game and the second this season, joining Jacob deGrom, while becoming the first pitcher in franchise history to record double-digit strikeouts and pick up two extra base hits in the same game.

Todd Frazier added a grand slam in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Michael Conforto and Robinson Cano added two hits a piece in the victory. Tensions flared in the ninth when Jacob Rhame threw a fastball well above Rhys Hoskins’s head, which resulted in both dugouts being warned. Cooler heads prevailed, and Rhame was eventually able to close out the game.
