It was an ugly night for the Mets in nearly every way, as they dropped the series opener to the Brewers in lopsided fashion 10-2. It was another shaky start for Jacob deGrom, whose season ERA is now approaching 5. He looked good in the first inning, working around a four pitch walk to Christian Yelich, but his pitch count was already elevated in the second, when he had to work out of a bases loaded jam with two strikeouts. The Brewers then hung five runs on deGrom in the third inning and it was all downhill from there for the Mets.
deGrom was removed from the game after just four innings at 89 pitches, but did strike out seven and finished his night with a 1-2-3 inning. Corey Oswalt, fresh up from Triple-A, came in the game in relief and surrendered four additional runs in the fifth inning.
Meanwhile, the Mets hit Chase Anderson hard, but mostly to no avail. In the second inning Lorenzo Cain made a leaping grab over the center field wall to rob Todd Frazier of a home run. The Mets scratched back a run in the fourth from an RBI single off the bat of Frazier. The Mets’ only other run came in the fifth as the result of a Robinson Cano RBI single. Cano had two hits and a walk and continues to look good at the plate.
Oswalt delivered two additional innings in relief, each 1-2-3 innings. The Brewers scored an additional run off Luis Avilan in the eighth inning to cruise to a final eight-run victory.
