During the Mets’ Sunday afternoon win over the Brewers, second baseman Robinson Cano was hit by a pitch on the hand. He appeared to be in a good amount of pain at the time and left the game. The Mets announced that initial x-rays on Cano’s hand were negative, though he will undergo further examination after swelling of his hand goes down.
After getting off to a bit of a slow start in his first season with the Mets, Cano has been hitting much better recently and has a .280/.324/.430 line with three home runs and a 105 wRC+. If he were to need any time on the injured list, the Mets would presumably play Jeff McNeil at second base regularly with Todd Frazier getting the bulk of the playing time at third. Infielder Jed Lowrie made his first rehab appearance in a minor league game today, and he’d be another option to fill in for Cano, though it sounds like he will need a considerable amount of time to join the major league roster.
