Final Score: Nationals 4, Mets 0 — Silence of the Bats

Following a late arrival in New York last night, the Mets’ bats looked dead,

MLB: Washington Nationals at New York Mets Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Unfortunately for the Mets, their red-hot offense ran into the roadblock that is their home ballpark as they dropped their home opener to Washington 4-0. In the battle of bearded aces, Stephen Strasburg came away with the win as Noah Syndergaard fell victim to another Victor Robles home run.

In an impressive feat of pitching dominance and offensive futility, these two teams combined to tally one hit as they entered the sixth inning. But, even without having a hit, the Nationals managed to score in the second inning after a pair of walks, a wild pitch, and a well-placed sacrifice bunt by Wilmer Difo. They then recorded their first hit and second run on Victor Robles’ homer to start off the sixth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Seth Lugo allowed another run to score in his worrying stint with Tim Peterson allowing the second run of the inning to come home. In the bottom half of the ninth, Sean Doolittle shut down the Mets to seal the deal on the Nats’ 4-0 victory.

Full recap to follow.
