In what was the most exciting game of the young season, the Mets topped the Nationals 6-5 in thrilling fashion. Steven Matz fought his control but ultimately tossed five scoreless innings, but the middle part of the Met bullpen struggled again, with Robert Gsellman, Justin Wilson, and Jeurys Familia all giving up runs. The offense came through, however, and Edwin Diaz nailed things down for his fourth save of the season.
The Mets had been in a home run drought to start the year, but that is no longer the case. Two solo shots from J.D. Davis and another from Michael Conforto built an early lead, and two more solo homers from Pete Alonso and Robinson Cano tied the game after the bullpen coughed it up. Of course, in a game where everything in the air seemed to leave the ball park, an RBI single from Keon Broxton proved to be the decisive run.
With the win, the Mets improve to 6-2 on the season. Max Scherzer and Zack Wheeler square off in the final game of the series against the Nationals tomorrow afternoon.
Full recap to follow.
