Final Score: Twins 14, Mets 8 - A slog in every sense of the word

The Mets dropped a terrible game to Minnesota on a rainy night in Queens.

MLB: Minnesota Twins at New York Mets Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets’ pitching staff had a truly terrible game against the Twins this evening at Citi Field, losing 14-6 on a rain delayed game. In the coldest, wettest game of the year, the Mets scored plenty, but not enough.

Jacob deGrom had his first bad in nearly a year, giving up six runs and eight hits in four innings, including three home runs. Only Luis Avilan got through a clean inning, with Seth Lugo, Robert Gsellman, and Jason Vargas each gave up at least one run.

Although a few of the Mets’ young hitters had good nights, it barely felt like it. Pete Alonso hit two opposite field home runs, and Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto each hit both a home run and a double. The pitching was just so terrible that it seemed no matter how many runs they scored, it wouldn’t be enough.

Both teams tested that hypothesis, though, as the Mets had the bases loaded with no one out in the ninth inning, but it just wasn’t in the cards.

Full recap to follow.
