Meet the Mets

The Mets and Wilmer Font were no match for Patrick Corbin and the Nationals. Font put the Mets in a hole early and the offense could never climb out of it against the southpaw. One of the bright spots was Jeurys Familia who looked good in his return from the the injured list. It will now be up to Zack Wheeler to help the team take the series in Washington.

This loss to the Nationals was a microcosm of everything that is wrong with the team this season.

Trading for pitching help was the right idea, but the Mets need to aim higher than Wilmer Font if they want to contend this season.

Robinson Cano’s struggles at the plate continued and he knows he has to be better at hitting fastballs in the strike zone.

With the Mets down big late, it was also a good time to test out J.D. Davis in left field who could see more time out there going forward.

Keon Broxton did not get to start against a pitcher he typically does well against so are his days on the roster numbered?

Seth Lugo has been a bright spot out of the bullpen all season long which has been a life saver given the volatility from the rest of the relievers.

Amed Rosario has been on a tear recently which gives his manager flexibility when filling out a lineup.

Dominic Smith would like to try his hand at the outfield again but the Mets are not inclined to try him out there again.

The Mets could get some pitching help this weekend if both Steven Matz and Jason Vargas make their return to the mound.

Anthony Kay is putting up dazzling numbers in Double-A and has put himself on the radar of the Mets’ front office.

Around the National League East

The Braves shut out the Cardinals 4-0.

The Marlins could not score yet again and were shut out by the Rays 1-0.

Gio Gonzalez shut down the Phillies and handed them another loss to the Brewers.

If the Nationals continue to struggle should they consider trading some of their stars?

Around Major League Baseball

Yankees’ third baseman Miguel Andujar will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum.

Major League Baseball is upgrading its use of technology which should give teams and fans greater insight into how the game is played.

Zack Greinke was in the midst of a strong outing but exited in the eighth inning with abdominal tightness.

The Twins placed Mitch Garver on the injured list after he suffered high ankle sprain in a collision with Shohei Ohtani at home plate.

The season is a quarter over and how are things shaping up this far into the season?
