Final Score: Mets 6, Nationals 1 - Unlikely heroes

New, comments

Two light hitting reserve outfielders came up big in a come-from-behind win.

MLB: Washington Nationals at New York Mets Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

After a depleted lineup struggled to generate offense for most of the game, the Mets rallied in the eighth to top the Nationals 6-1. Jacob deGrom didn’t have his best stuff but battled through six innings, allowing only one run. Max Scherzer was even better, shutting out the Mets for six innings, but another bullpen implosion from the Nationals wasted that effort.

Juan Lagares had the biggest offensive moment of the game, driving a three-run double off of Nationals’ closer Sean Doolittle, who was bidding for a four out save. Two batters later, Rajai Davis launched a three-run home run in his first plate appearance as a Met, giving the Mets a five run lead. Tyler Bashlor worked through the ninth to secure the Mets’ first win when trailing after seven innings this season.

The Mets and Nats will play finish this four-game series tomorrow at noon, with Steven Matz squaring off against Stephen Strasburg.

Full recap to follow.
