Brandon Nimmo has bulging disc and whiplash

The injury originally labeled as inflammation turns out to be more serious than that

Brandon Nimmo was originally put on the injured list with what the Mets described as a stiff neck. After he received an MRI, the Mets announced that he was suffering from inflammation in his neck.

But on Saturday, the Mets have followed up this announcement with news that Nimmo is actually suffering from whiplash and has a bulging disc in his neck. This is significantly more serious than just inflammation.

Nimmo’s return date is now not known. He plans on starting his rehab when he regains full range of motion in his neck. This is bad news for the Mets, but at the very least it is good in that Nimmo will now receive the proper treatment. He received a steroidal injection in his neck to mitigate inflammation.

Nimmo broke out last year, as he hit .263/.404/.483 with 17 home runs and a 149 wRC+, but he has struggled this year. Playing with an injured neck certainly could have contributed to his .200/.344/.323 line and 92 wRC+ thus far this season.
