Pre-Draft Look at Performance of Top 25 Prospects

With the draft a couple of days away we're ready to gear up for short-season ball when a whole slew of new prospects will finally be found in box scores. It's a natural time to take a look at how the system is performing thus far. Common perceptions are the farm system is a huge disappointment this year. While there have been disappointments some of the youngest full-season players are starting to heat up.

Below is a look at the AA staff Top 25 pre-season prospect list and how they're performing thus far. Luckily there are guys that didn't make the Top 25 that are performing above expectations and might crack the list if it had been made today. The list is presented in order of pre-season AA staff prospect rank.

1. Pete Alonso

Graduated. Word is he hit a couple balls hard in the bigs.

2. Andres Gimenez

Regressed. Compared to 2018 his AA Ops is -.058, k% went from 14.4% to 24.5%, bb from 9.2% to 7.9%, ISO is up from .081 to .107. No sign of breakout - last 10 games .200, 0 HR, 11/5 k/bb

3. Mark Vientos

Adjusting -€” tearing it up of late. Overall numbers are fine .256/.311/.402 but killing it over last 13 .340/.340/.566 with only 8 k's but 0 walks.

4. David Peterson

Not ascending .... 4.14 ERA, 10.7 k/9, 3.7 bb/9, 1.60 WHIP

5. Ronny Mauricio

Ascending -€” lately on fire. Only 18 years old yet posting .279/.328/.353 at Columbia. 21% k -€” 6.8% walk. .074 ISO BUT last 16 games .303/.343/.439 which is a .136 ISO.

6. Shervyen Newton

Adjusting -€” really hot of late. Last 13 games .289/.327/.519 w/2 HR, 1 triple & 4 doubles! He hit .098/.203/.115 his first 19 games.

7. Luis Guillorme

Stock even to up. Getting on base at a .404 clip while hitting .286. ISO of .100 is meh but fine for a plus glove SS. What kind of trade value does this profile have?

8. Thomas Szapucki

Is he injured again or not? No stats on his milb page but I swear he had a couple of short "get arm strength back" appearances early in the season before being assigned to Brooklyn. We'll know in a week or so.

9. Franklyn Kilome

Injured out for year.

10. Anthony Kay

Ascending. Pre-season 40+ FV per fangraphs. AA performance is strong, ready for promotion to AAA.

11. Ross Adolph

Descending. Traded .655 ops at A ball as a 22 year old. But hitting .286 over last 11 w/4 doubles & 2 HRs But 49.6% k-rate has not improved during his hot streak.

12. Simeon Woods-Richardson

Descending. First 4 starts 0 ER 18 k's in 13ip. Since then 25 er, 22 k's in 20.1ip

13. Luis Santana

Traded. Only 6 Abs. Likely injured.

14. Desmond Lindsay

Descending -€” Time to officially stamp him a washout? Back on injured list since 4/20 after a .196/.305/.294 start in 51 PAs.

15. Tony Dibrell

Progressing? Only 40 k's in 46.2ip but only 2 HRs allowed ... 2.31 ERA.

16. Eric Hanhold

Descending. Only 6.5 k/9ip vs. 9+ last season in the PCL.

17. Stephen Villines

Ascending. Control issues surfacing at AAA but he's made it there.

18. Adrian Hernandez

2018 DSLer

19. Stanley Consuegra

2018 GCLer

20. Jordan Humphreys

Injured?

21. Will Toffey

Descending. .112 ISO, .178 OPS. He's lost whatever he found in AA last season. Takes a walk but 30% k-rate.

22. Daniel Zamora

Ascending. Contributing (unevenly) in Queens.

23. Bobby Wahl

Traded -€” injured for year.

24. Ali Sanchez

Treading water? I don't really know what his profile ought to be this year. Overall .250/.326/.310 but on a nice little 6 game run of 6-20 w/1 double & 1 HR & 20% walk rate.

25. Francisco Alvarez

$2.7m IFA signing last season. 17-year old catcher.
