Avilan made an appearance in the eighth inning of last night’s 3-1 loss. After striking out Ben Gamel for the second out of the frame, Avilan was removed from the game and replaced by Drew Gagnon. Mickey Callaway later told reporters that Avilan was experiencing tightness in his elbow and had trouble getting loose in the bullpen. In his first season for the Mets, Avilan has a 9.28 ERA, a 5.18 FIP, and a 2.06 WHIP in 10.2 innings, which amounts to a -0.3 bWAR. He has struck out 11 batters while issuing five walks.
This is Flexen’s second stint in the major leagues this season after making a start in place of an injured Jacob deGrom earlier this year. In that April 20 outing against the St. Louis Cardinals, Flexen lasted 4.1 innings and was charged with six runs (five earned) on seven hits. The 24-year-old has a 4.42 ERA, a 3.62 FIP, and a 1.26 WHIP in four starts for the Syracuse Mets this year.
