Much like last night’s roller coaster affair, the Mets struck early Wednesday afternoon, securing a 1-0 lead two batters into the game after Amed Rosario followed Jeff McNeil’s leadoff hustle double with an RBI single.
Tomas Nido extended the Mets lead to 2-0 with a home run to deep center in the second inning. Eric Hosmer answered that run with an opposite field home run just out of McNeil’s reach in the left field seats. The Padres then tied the game in the third when pitcher Matt Strahm doubled, then came around on a Franmil Reyes RBI single.
The Mets’ had a couple of chances to take the lead thereafter—one died in Manuel Margot’s glove, as the center fielder pulled back Pete Alonso’s home run bid in the top of the sixth. In the seventh, Margot couldn’t quite snag Brandon Nimmo’s deep drive, but his effort prevented Michael Conforto from scoring on the play.
In the bottom of the seventh, Hunter Renfroe led off with blast that no one could pull back, deep into the left field seats. The Mets put two on in the ninth inning against San Diego closer Kirby Yates, but Tomas Nido struck out to end the game and give the Padres the game and the series.
