Final Score Game 1: Yankees 12, Mets 5—Offensive Defense

Zack Wheeler allowed nine runs, and the defense made two costly errors in the defeat.

MLB: Game One-New York Mets at New York Yankees Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets couldn’t get out their own way in game one of today’s day-night doubleheader. They made several blunders in the field, from missing bases to throwing errors on routine grounders to misplaying fly balls, and the New York Yankees seemingly made them pay every single time.

The troubles began in the second, when Zack Wheeler made a stellar bare-handed play and appeared to throw out lead runner Brett Gardner at second base for the first out of the inning. Upon review, it was ruled that Amed Rosario missed stepping on second base. Gardner was ruled safe on the error and would eventually come around to score on a Gary Sanchez bloop single. The Mets responded by putting up a four-spot in the third—the exclamation mark courtesy of a Jeff McNeil three-run home run—to briefly give them a three-run lead.

Things completely unraveled in the fourth with the Mets up by two. First came a Gio Urshela two-run home run, which tied the game up at two. Then, with two outs, Todd Frazier threw away a routine DJ LeMahieu grounder. Following the error and an Aaron Hicks walk, Luke Voit connected on a three-run home run to put the Mets behind by three. Wheeler was tagged for two more runs in the fifth before being removed after allowing a career-high nine runs (five earned) in 4.2 innings. Gary Sanchez added a two-run home run off Tim Peterson in the eighth inning.

The Mets lost 12-5 despite getting hits from seven of the nine starters in their lineup. Everybody picked up a base hit except for Frazier and Pete Alonso, who both went 0-for-4 in the defeat. McNeil and Tomas Nido each picked up two hits.
