Final Score Game 2: Mets 10, Yankees 4—Split Happens

The New York Mets earned a split of the day-night doubleheader and the Subway Series with a 10-4 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night.

The Mets took the lead three batters into the game thanks to a Pete Alonso three-run home run to left-center to stake Jason Vargas to an early lead. The Mets doubled their lead in the third thanks to run-scoring hits from Michael Conforto, Wilson Ramos, and Adeiny Hechavarria. The Mets used the short porch in right field to their advantage later on in the game, as J.D. Davis hit a two-run home run to the opposite field while Carlos Gomez added a solo homer to right in the fifth. Amed Rosario added a run-scoring double in the ninth for the team’s tenth run of the game.

Vargas was winless in ten career starts while sporting a 6.84 ERA against the Yankees heading into this game. While he wasn’t quite as strong as he had been in his last two starts, he held the potent Yankees’ lineup to three runs over six innings of work to earn the victory. He saw his 17 inning scoreless streak end when he gave up three runs in the third, but that was all the Yankees would muster against he lefty. Jeurys Familia, Seth Lugo, and Drew Gagnon pitched three innings out of the bullpen for the Mets, with Brett Gardner adding a solo homer in the ninth off Gagnon.

With the victory, the Mets have now won 50 regular season games against the Yankees since Interleague Play began in 1997.
