Final Score — Cardinals 5, Mets 4 — Rain Dismay

Edwin Diaz and a lot of rain help hand the Mets a loss in the first of two games today.

Like many Jacob deGrom starts before this, a solid start from the ace was spoiled by the bullpen and some extenuating circumstances which ultimately ended up being a 5-4 Mets loss.

On the offensive side of things, the Mets’ night was a tale of highs and lows, with almost all of their production taking place during the third and sixth innings with little action between. Jeff McNeil singled in the third before Michael Conforto brought them both home on a two-run dinger. Later, in the sixth, Dominic Smith delivered the Mets third run on a single, and Amed Rosario drove in the fourth on a sacrifice fly that turned into a double play after Todd Frazier got himself thrown out at third base.

After a nine minute rain delay that never saw the tarp cover the field, Edwin Diaz allowed the Cardinals to tie the game on a walk and a pair of hits, the biggest of the pair being Harrison Bader’s RBI double that tied the game after Amed Rosario couldn’t come up with the ball. Immediately after that, a rain delay actually involving a tarp took place and pushed the last bit of this game back a day until Friday night.

Picking up right where he left off, Edwin Diaz allowed a pair of hits in the resumed tenth inning, including a Paul DeJong RBI single to give the Cardinals a 5-4 lead that they had little issue holding.
