On the same day that they placed Noah Syndergaard on the injured list with a hamstring injury, the Mets lost Jason Vargas early in their series finale today when he fouled off a ball and suffered a calf cramp, per the team’s announcement. Whether or not he suffered a significant injury is unknown at this time.
Vargas threw four innings and gave up three runs, two of which were earned, before he left the game in the bottom of the fourth. If he were to miss any time, the Mets would go from having had the vast majority of their games started by the five pitchers who were in the Opening Day rotation to having just three of those five pitchers available as the team gears up for a crucial road trip.
After a brutal start to his year, Vargas has settled in rather nicely and currently has a 3.74 ERA and a 4.34 FIP in 55.1 innings.
