The Mets’ two glaring weaknesses cost them again in the 12-3 loss against Atlanta. Their defense and bullpen were atrocious which lead to a thrashing by the first place Braves. The Braves got on the board early in part to defensive miscues by both Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso. Zack Wheeler limited the damage to just two runs which allowed the Mets to eventually tie it up 2-2.
Pete Alonso was the first to drive in a run with a RBI single and Zack Wheeler followed suit two innings later to tie the game. Unfortunately the game didn’t stay tied long when Wilson Ramos allowed a ball to get behind him to put runners in scoring position. Both of those runners came home to double the lead and the Braves would tack on another for good measure when Amed Rosario couldn’t get to a ball hit by him in the infield.
Robinson Cano attempted to get the Mets back in it with a solo home run but once Wheeler was out of the game the bullpen immediately imploded to the tune of seven runs. Jeurys Familia’s nightmare stretch of appearances continued and Drew Gagnon couldn’t stop the bleeding and the Braves poured it on.
The Mets are now four games below .500 and eight-and-half games out of first.
Full recap to follow.
