Michael Conforto flied out to the wall in left field in the first, narrowly missing giving the Mets an early 2-0 lead. That was the closest they would come, as New York avoided blowing another late lead Sunday by falling behind quickly this time, and never catching up.
Steven Matz’s first inning blues continued, as he found himself in a 3-0 hole three batters into the game. Ketel Marte hit a 482 foot blast into left to lead off the game. After Tim Locastro followed with a single, Eduardo Escobar followed with another homer, this one just inside the left field foul pole.
A makeshift Met lineup struggled against Merrill Kelly, who struck out 10 Mets over 7.2 solid innings. While the Mets looked listless and didn’t appear poised for another late comeback, Hector Santiago and Tyler Bashlor struggled in the eighth to put the game further out of reach as the Diamondbacks claimed the series.
