Walter Lockett’s Mets debut did not go according to plan in a 7-4 loss. Lockett started strong, retiring the first six batters he faced, but recorded only one out in the third while giving up six runs. Brooks Pounders and Wilmer Font contributed 3.2 scoreless innings in relief before Robert Gsellman gave up a solo home run in the seventh, but their efforts were for naught as the Met offense couldn’t close the gap.
Offensively, the early game was a story of missed opportunities, with double plays in both the first and second short-circuiting big scoring chances. The highlight of the evening was another monstrous home run from Pete Alonso, who lined a 117 MPH blast that exited the stadium in approximately two nanoseconds. Todd Frazier added a solo home run in the ninth, but that was the only whimper the Mets could manage before Steve Cishek closed out the loss.
The loss drops the Mets to 35-40 on the season and deepens their already significant deficit in the NL East. Jason Vargas will take the mound against Yu Darvish in the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon.
Full recap to follow.
