Final Score: Mets 10, Cubs 2 - Afternoon romp

It was a dominant performance on both sides of the ball.

MLB: New York Mets at Chicago Cubs Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets put together what feels like their most dominant performance in months, blowing away the Cubs 10-2. Zack Wheeler had some trouble to work through early, but was unphased and wound up throwing seven shutout innings. The offense did more than enough to support him, hitting three home runs and scoring in each of the first six innings.

Pete Alonso’s first inning bomb was his 26th of the season, tying Darryl Strawberry’s Met rookie record. Alonso also now has the record for most home runs before the All Star Break by an NL Rookie. Jeff McNeil also had a notable day, notching his fifth consecutive multi-hit game.

After winning the middle two games of this four game set, the Mets have a chance to win their first road series since April. Jacob deGrom will take the mound against Cole Hamels in the finale.

Full recap to follow.
