Final Score: Cubs 5, Mets 3 - Gassed

The Mets’ pitchers didn’t have their best stuff today.

MLB: New York Mets at Chicago Cubs Jim Young-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets dropped a tough one to the Cubs this afternoon, losing 5-3 due to an eighth-inning rally from the home team. While the Mets still split the series with Chicago, today’s loss seems like a real missed opportunity.

The Cubs got on the board in the bottom of the second with an RBI single by their starting pitcher Cole Hamels. The Mets quickly tied it up on Pete Alonso’s 27th home run of the season, and took the lead an inning later when Tomas Nido hit a solo home run and Jacob deGrom did his best Hamels impression and drove in a run of his own.

deGrom didn’t look his best today, but managed to limit the damage, striking out nine, giving up eight hits, and walking done, while giving up two runs in six innings. Seth Lugo similarly didn’t look great, and wound up coughing up the lead in his second inning of work, giving up a three-run home run to Javier Baez.

Full recap to follow.
