Final Score: Phillies 5, Mets 4 - Blew it again

The Mets’ bullpen strikes again.

For the third straight night, the Phillies came from behind to top the Mets 5-4 in ten innings. Jason Vargas was excellent, but the Mets’ bullpen was once again awful. Seth Lugo couldn’t strand the runner he inherited from Vargas, then allowed two runs of his own that tied the game at four in the seventh. Stephen Nogosek walked one and gave up two loud hits without recording an out in the bottom of the tenth, with Jay Bruce notching the walkoff hit.

The brutal loss wasted what was a fun game for the Mets’ young position players. Jeff McNeil and Dom Smith homered, while Pete Alonso and Smith both stole the first bases of their careers. It also wasted a great start from Jason Vargas, who struck out a career-high ten batters in 6.1 innings. The Mets now find themselves seven games below .500 at the halfway point of the season.

Zack Wheeler will take the mound tomorrow afternoon against Aaron Nola, as the Mets close out their eleven game road trip.

Full recap to follow.
