The Mets have activated Jeff McNeil from the 10-day injured list ahead of tonight’s game against the San Francisco Giants. To make room on the 25-man roster for McNeil, Tyler Bashlor has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.
Bashlor posted a 5.40 ERA and a 6.23 FIP over 11 2⁄3 innings of work out of the bullpen. The Mets had been carrying an extra pitcher and now go back down to seven arms in their bullpen with this roster move.
This is a somewhat surprising development, as the Mets did not give the impression that McNeil was further along in his rehab than Robinson Cano, who is reportedly not being activated today. The Mets have not yet been forthcoming with details on Cano’s status other than that he is not available today.
Cano and McNeil were both placed on the injured list on May 23 with a quad issue and a hamstring issue, respectively. Before his injury, McNeil had been one of the Mets’ most consistent hitters, hitting .333/.418/.461 with a 142 wRC+ over 189 plate appearances. His bat is a welcome sight back in the Mets’ lineup. He is hitting leadoff and playing second base in tonight’s game.
