Final Score: Rockies 5, Mets 1—Old foes strike again

Daniel Murphy and Ian Desmond got big hits, and the offense and bullpen failed Jacob deGrom once more

MLB: Colorado Rockies at New York Mets Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Jacob deGrom pitched well, but the offense and bullpen provided little support as the Mets fell to the Rockies 5-1 in the series opener against the Rockies.

The team came into the night hoping for a strong performance from their star pitcher, and by and large he did not disappoint, as the Cy Young winner threw six innings and racked up ten strikeouts against only one walk. He did give up two runs, however, with the first one coming in the third inning off a Raimel Tapia run-scoring double and the second in the fourth off an Ian Desmond single. Those two runs would be all that the Rockies needed, as the Mets were not able to do any damage outside of a sixth-inning solo homer—one of just six hits for the Amazins this evening—off the bat of Michael Conforto.

Colorado did manage to put up some insurance runs off Drew Gagnon in the eighth inning, as the righty reliever gave up homers to both David Dahl and former Met Daniel Murphy. These two homers preceded what might have been the most exciting moment of an otherwise listless night, as Desmond was hit by the first pitch of his at-bat immediately following Murphy’s bomb. The Rockies—and particularly Murphy—did not take kindly to this beaning, and the benches and bullpens quickly emptied. Not much resulted from this brief flare-up, however, and while the Mets did manage to briefly threaten to make a comeback by bringing the tying runner up to bat in the ninth following two hits, Rosario softly grounded out to second to end the game.

Full recap to follow.
