The New York Mets evened up their three-game series with the Colorado Rockies with a 5-3 victory on Saturday night. With the game knotted at three, the Mets pushed the go-ahead run across in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh to lock up the win.
Steven Matz tied a career high by tossing 120 pitches on the evening. Even after throwing 101 through five, he was left out there to navigate one more inning. With two runners on and two outs, Matz struck out Charlie Blackmon on the final pitch of his outing for his season-high 10th strikeout of the year. It was just the second time in his career that the left-hander registered ten or more punch outs.
Early on in this one, Colorado always seemed to have an answer every time New York scored. Carlos Gomez got the Mets on the board two-run home run in the second, but Colorado came right back with two in the third. After a Todd Frazier single made it 3-2 in the bottom of the frame, the Rockies came back to tie it in the top of the fourth. The Mets went ahead for good in the sixth after an Amed Rosario double play scored Wilson Ramos. Pete Alonso added some breathing room in the seventh with his 21st home run of the year.
Edwin Diaz picked up his 14th save of the year with a scoreless ninth.
Full recap to follow.
