It was a quintessential 2018 Jacob deGrom start in every sense of the phrase. deGrom was brilliant over seven scoreless innings, striking out ten Giants. But the Mets couldn’t get him any run support, managing just three hits off Tyler Beede, who tossed eight scoreless innings for the Giants.
After that, it was a battle of two overworked bullpens, as the game went to extra innings for the second straight night. Luis Avilan and Will Smith each pitched a scoreless inning in the eighth and ninth, respectively. Jacob Rhame—the only pitcher on yesterday’s roster to not have been used in last night’s sixteen inning game due to his suspension—walked the tightrope in the ninth for the Mets, walking two batters, but escaping the jam to send the game to the tenth.
The Mets were retired 1-2-3 in the tenth by Sam Dyson. Rhame wasn’t so lucky in his second inning of work in the bottom of the tenth. He once again walked the leadoff hitter and to his credit, he should have gotten out of the inning. He struck out two straight batters and induced a fly ball off the bat of Pablo Sandoval. But Dominic Smith dropped the routine shallow fly ball in Luis Castillo-like fashion, leading to another walk-off loss that can only be described as Metsian to its core.
