For the third time in the last four games, the Mets were walked off by the Giants in extra innings, falling 3-2 in the twelfth. Steven Matz was solid for six innings and home runs from Michael Conforto and Amed Rosario put the Mets up early, but the offense went totally dormant after that and the bullpen eventually cracked.
It’s debatable whether this makes the loss more or less frustrating, but the Mets didn’t even have a ton of opportunities in this one. They managed only five hits and four walks while also hitting at least three or four deep fly balls that died on the warning track. An awful strike zone didn’t help, but that’s no excuse given that both teams had to contend with Mark Ripperger’s zone.
The loss drops the Mets to 45-54 on the season, and they’ll have a much needed off day tomorrow before starting a series with the Padres on Tuesday.
Full recap to follow.
