Should Chaim Bloom Have Won the GM Position?

Looking at how this season has turned out, in what was supposed to be a "win-now" effort; we see that choosing Brodie Van Wagenen has perhaps not been the best choice for GM. While I loved the Mets approach from this year's draft, it is not enough to forgive the failed, first off-season for BVW.

Besides for the trade that netted us J.D. Davis, the other trades executed by BVW have not come out looking so good. Hindsight is 20/20, but I remember wanting to sign D.J. Lemahieu rather than trade for Cano; and to sign Zack Britton and Adam Ottavino over signing Familia and trading for Diaz. At the time, I did like the signings of Wilson Ramos and Jed Lowrie; despite now that we see they haven't worked out as anticipated. I will also say that it was a good choice to bring up Alonso at the start of the year, and to not trade McNeil either.

Perhaps this post could have waited until after the trade deadline to see what BVW will do as a seller during the season, but the thought of how things would be different if the Wilpons hired Chaim Bloom instead won't seem to escape me.

As many of you may know, Bloom believed the Mets should have been sellers during the recent offseason, instead electing to rebuild the farm system and retool the roster with young talent. And while it is understandable as to why the Wilpons wanted to go for it this year; on paper the Mets did have a good roster, BVW did not do a good enough job at filling it out to ensure its success. BVW failed to acquire adequate starting pitching depth, which would have been very useful this season; and especially neglected to properly bolster the bullpen past Diaz, Lugo, Wilson, Gsellman, and Familia.

The current state of the Mets is similar to how things have been before over this past decade; uncommitted to rebuild, yet unfit to compete (outside of 2015 at least). The Mets are a fourth-place team with a weak farm system, who are now looking like they will be sellers during the season. Hopefully we will see BVW redeem himself with shrewd trades in the next week.

We don't really know how Bloom would have conducted his off season, but seeing where the Mets are now, perhaps it would have been better to have handed him the keys in the first place. What if he decided to trade Wheeler while his value was at its peak? What about Syndergaard, or even DeGrom? It would have been blasphemous to trade DeGrom after the season he was coming off of, but could you imagine the kind of package he would have netted us? If we went full rebuild and traded away our best players while their values were high; I don't think it would be a stretch to say that we would currently be sitting on the best farm system in baseball.

How do you think the Mets would currently be situated if Chaim Bloom had won the GM position?
