Final Score: Mets 5, Padres 2—The Robbie Cano Show

Cano notched his first career three home run game in the victory.

MLB: San Diego Padres at New York Mets Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

With the Pete Alonso/Chris Paddack feud at the forefront of everybody’s mind heading into tonight’s game, it was the veterans who carried the New York Mets to a 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres in tonight’s series opener.

All the offense came from 36-year-old Robinson Cano, who slugged a solo home run in the fourth, a two-run shot in the sixth, and another two-run homer in the seventh to give the Mets all the offense they would need. He cracked the first two off Paddack, who lasted five-plus innings while allowing three runs in the losing effort. Paddack faced Alonso three times, walking him twice while inducing a ground ball to end the third inning.

Meanwhile, Mets’ starter Jason Vargas pitched six stellar innings while surrendering just one hit to Eric Hosmer with no outs in the fifth. He worked around four walks and struck out eight batters to earn his fifth win. The team went to Tyler Bashlor, Robert Gsellman, Justin Wilson, and Edwin Diaz, who combined to pitch three innings of two-run ball, with Diaz getting the save.

Full recap to follow.
