Final Score: Phillies 8, Mets 3 - Bruce barrage

A former Met went deep twice in a blowout loss to close out the first half.

The Mets sleep-walked through another Sunday matinee, falling 8-3 to the Phillies. Zack Wheeler had a disastrous first inning, giving up four runs, and gave up another two runs in the sixth on a home run from newly-established Met killer Jay Bruce. Wilmer Font gave up two more runs on solo shots from Bruce and Rhys Hoskins.

Pete Alonso provided the lone bright spot in this game, launching his 30th home run of the season in the sixth inning. The two-run homer was the Mets’ first hit of the day, and capped off what has been a stupendous first half from the rookie first baseman. Adeiny Hechavarria added a meaningless home run in the ninth on a ball that had no business leaving the yard - so it goes in 2019.

With the All Star Break upon us, the Mets will mercifully be off for a few days. Best of luck to Alonso in the home run derby, as well as his fellow All Stars Jacob deGrom and Jeff McNeil.

Full recap to follow.
