The Mets compared to the league at halftime

Going into the All-Star break, the Mets can look at themselves in the mirror and see....mediocrity unfortunately. As a team, they rank rank middle of the pack in hitting, and in the lower half in pitching and fielding.

Compared with 2018, the Mets are ranking higher in hitting, thanks mostly to Peter Alonso and the regular presence of Jeff O'Neil, and ranking quite a bit lower in pitching and fielding. You can't blame the lively ball for this since it's a comparison with all teams.

With respect to the pitching, each starting pitcher has had some problems, but the well-documented main problem is the bullpen, ranked 28th, like last year. None of the new relievers--Diaz, Familia, Wilson, Avilan, Font, Pounders--has been reliable, and regrettably, the relievers pitch almost as much as the starters.

For the Mets to compete with the rest of the league, it seems clear what the most pressing problem is. The general manager has tried to address the problem but it is clear he has to try a lot more.
