Only a day after trade rumors swirled across the league, Zack Wheeler took the mound fore New York and shut down the White Sox as the Mets secured a 4-0 victory in Chicago. While Wheeler was busy throwing seven shutout innings and never allowing a White Sox runner to reach second base, Robinson Cano provided the offense with a pair of runs batted in and a homer to his name.
For the White Sox, Dylan Cease posted the longest start of his young career, but the Mets offense collected seven hits, two walks, and drove in four runs against him on the afternoon. Along with Cano’s homer and run-scoring double, Wilson Ramos delivered the other two runs of the afternoon on a single that brought home one on his own while a second crossed the plate as Welington Castillo lost the ball to make it a 4-0 game.
Luis Avilan and Jeurys Familia combined to pitch a scoreless final two innings to secure the Mets’ 4-0 win and send them to Pittsburgh on a high note.
