Final Score: Mets 10, Braves 8 — Chopped Down to Size

A sextet of runs from Pete Alonso and 23 hits for the squad lead the Mets to a dramatic win in Atlanta.

Coming off of three straight losses, the Mets bounced back in a big way with their 10-8 victory over the Braves. Marcus Stroman captured a win as nine different Mets recorded hits while Pete Alonso led the charge with a rookie record six runs batted in on the night.

While Alonso’s 5-5 performance was certainly impressive, Amed Rosario’s 5-6 night with four runs scored shouldn’t be overlooked as the young shortstop ended up a home run short of completing the cycle. The dynamic duo became the first pair of Mets hitters ever to rack up five hits in a game.

On the pitching side of things, Marcus Stroman had another shaky but adequate start as he went 5.1 innings while allowing four hits, two earned runs, and four walks on his way to his first win in the orange and blue. Coming out of the bullpen, Luis Avilan, Brad Brach, and Drew Gagnon were called on to take care of the last few innings, but not before Freddie Freeman homered in the eighth and ninth innings, bringing two runs home, while Ronald Acuna Jr. added a two more on his ninth inning blast, all against Drew Gagnon. Even after those homers, the Braves weren’t quite done as Josh Donaldson added a dinger of his own right after Freeman’s second to bring the Braves within two.

As Gagnon’s meltdown reached frightening level, Edwin Diaz was called on to finish the game and he did as he was asked, closing the door on the Mets’ 10-8 win.
