Final Score: Mets 11, Royals 5 - Pete steals the show

A record breaking bomb capped an exciting win over the Royals.

Facing a one run deficit heading into the final three innings, the Mets’ offense blew away the Royals’ bullpen en route to an 11-5 win. Michael Conforto launched a three-run home run in the first, and the Mets batted around in the seventh, putting up six runs on eight hits. Late in the game, Pete Alonso launched his record-breaking 40th home run of the year, topping Cody Bellinger’s NL rookie record.

Zack Wheeler was just ok in this one, and was victimized by his own bad defense. The bullpen was excellent, however, allowing only one run in four innings of work. Jeurys Familia worked two innings, Brad Brach worked a scoreless eighth, and Edwin Diaz got a chance to work through his issues with a scoreless ninth in a blow out. This game also featured Amed Rosario’s first professional appearance in the outfield, where he handled both his chances without incident.

The win improves the Mets to 64-60, and they’ll pick up a game on both the Brewers and the Phillies. They’ll be off on Monday before heading to Cleveland for a three game set.

Full recap to follow.
