Final Score: Pirates 8, Mets 4—All Good Things Come to an End

The Mets’ pitching, which has been so good since the All-Star break, let them down tonight.

This game started on a high note for the Mets, but it did not end the same way it began. The Mets scored two runs in the first inning thanks to doubles by Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil plus a base hit by Robinson Cano and a run-scoring groundout. They added another run in the third as a result of another base hit from Cano and a double by J.D. Davis.

But Steven Matz, who was so brilliant the last time he faced this team, let an inning get away from him. The Pirates dropped a five spot on Matz in fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead and chase Matz from the game. Robert Gsellman then came in and delivered 2 13 fantastic innings in relief to keep the Mets in the game.

The Mets did indeed scratch back a run in the seventh off the Pirates bullpen, but Tyler Bashlor let the game get away in the eighth. He gave up a three-run homer to Starling Marte to make the score 8-4 and put the game essentially out of reach for the Mets. Jeurys Familia escaped trouble to pitch a scoreless ninth, but the Mets failed to rally against Kyle Crick in the eighth or Felipe Vazquez in the ninth.

The Mets’ winning streak officially comes to an end at seven games.

Full recap to follow.
