Steven Matz’s excellent start wasn’t enough, and Braves completed a sweep of the Mets with a 2-1 victory. Matz tossed six innings of one run ball to continue his second-half run, while Paul Sewald and Justin Wilson also looked good in relief. Two home runs from Met-killer Josh Donaldson were all the Braves needed, however, as the Mets’ offense failed to show until it was too late.
It was the second time in three starts that Dallas Keuchel has absolutely shut down the Mets. Keuchel, who signed midseason and has been mostly bad against everyone else, now has thirteen scoreless innings against the Mets in August. His latest effort caps off a brutal weekend series, one where the differences between a fringe wild card contender and one of the better teams in the league has been clearly highlighted.
The loss drops the Mets to 67-63. and they’ll remain at least two games back of the Cubs for the second wild spot. Those Cubs will come in for a critical three game series starting Tuesday.
