Final Score: Phillies 5, Mets 2 - Throwing the season away

The Mets did everything in their power to lose this game.

MLB: New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies John Geliebter-USA TODAY Sports

The Mets put forth their typical Sunday ‘best’, falling 5-2 to the Phillies in a critical game in the wild card race. Marcus Stroman had his first quality start as a Met, allowing only two runs in 6+ innings, but the Met offense was stymied by Zach Eflin, a pitcher with a 4.72 FIP on the season.

In addition to the stagnant offense, some highly questionable managing in the eighth was the prime culprit in this game. Mickey Callaway short circuited a scoring chance in the top half by bunting, then turned to Daniel Zamora in the bottom half against Bryce Harper rather than a more reliable option. Poor pitching from Jeurys Familia and a bad throw from Brandon Nimmo compounded on those errors and led to three runs that put the Phillies up for good.

With their playoff hopes hanging in the balance at 69-67, the Mets head to Washington tomorrow before welcoming Philadelphia to Citi Field later next week.

Full recap to follow.
