The Mets jumped all over Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray in the bottom of the first inning. Amed Rosario got the inning started with a double, and with one out, Jeff McNeil got hit by a pitch. The two then pulled a double steal, which allowed Rosario to score on Wilson Ramos’s ground out to second.
J.D. Davis then lined a ball to left—it looked as if Tim Locastro had a play on it, but he pulled up at the last second, allowing the second run to score, and opening the proverbial floodgates. Todd Frazier and Brandon Nimmo would go back-to-back to make it a five run first, and a Juan Lagares double chased Ray before the inning had closed.
Steven Matz looked as if he was intent on making the lead evaporate in the heat, as he walked the first three batters in the top of the second. However, Matz got Carson Kelly to strike out swinging, then induced a double play grounder from pinch hitter Kevin Cron to escape the jam.
Matz settled in thereafter, and Todd Frazier added a second home run while Jeff McNeil added a pair of his own to expand the lead, making it a comfortable 9-0 by the time Matz had finished his six innings and turned it over to the bullpen to close it out.
Full recap to follow.
